February 5 -- Tolezo Zoo, part 3, birdies

.

A corner of the bird house, with sky.

Love the variety of warm colors, with touches of cool.

I was standing pretty close to the building for the two shots above.  My better half noticed that if I stepped back several steps, my view would encompass this flock of birds in the trees behind the bird house.  It seemed fitting, to see a flock of birds right there........  (Starlings, I bet.  They weren't big enough to be crows.)

I read that this was a goose of some sort, but forgot to get a pic of the info about him(?).  I don't know what distinguishes a goose from a duck.  He wasn't very big.....

He was very interested in what was going on inside.  He stood there, looking in, as long as we were in that part of the bird house.

There weren't other birds to see, from his vantage point.  Just us, and some benches.....

Amused by the legs on the benches................

I took several pics of these next guys, but none were sharp, alas.

These hornbills were much larger.  I'd estimate a yard, from tip of beak to end of tail.  They made a lot of noise with their wings when they flew from perch to perch.

Note nest hole in fake tree to the right of the lower individual.  I believe hornbills have successfully reproduced at the Toledo Zoo.

There are a couple of biggish rooms in the bird house where there is nothing between you and the inhabitants.  No net, no fence, no plexiglas.  Even so, it can be hard to get a sharp pic.  The light wasn't that great when we were there, and these guys move very quickly.  And often.

Back to an area with fence between us and them.  Pink-necked fruit dove, a long way from home (Sumatra, Java, Bali).

The only bird besides the dove, above, whose info I managed to capture.  This is a kagu, from New Caledonia.

Nearly all the pics I got looked like this.  There were two of them, walking back and forth.  They would pause, just long enough to trick you into deciding to take a pic, and then immediately would move....

Ahah!  Got one that is sharp!  You can even see the eye clearly!  These were about the size of crows, I think, but with longer legs.
