May 31, part 4 -- rest of the day

.

Here is a link to the interactive expedition map.

Driving from the eastern part of the north rim back to the southern part of the north rim of the Grand Canyon on May 31, 2017.  (This trip is tens of miles.  27, maybe?  I can't remember.......)

I think this is quaking aspen (which we also saw at Bryce Canyon).  I'm told that all of this is likely to be one individual, with many, many stems.  I wonder if the big dead bits at the bottom were parts of the same individual.  Or even the same species..........

Quaking aspens have very white bark, and, at least in late May, they have chartreuse leaves.

Here's what an older one looks like.  Still with very white bark.

This looks like the same sort of thing.  Only dead?  Or maybe just not leafed out yet?  I don't know.

Back at the southern end of the north rim.  Our familiar territory (for the last few days).

Incredible landscape, and fabulous skies...............
