The national mall, which runs lengthwise between the Lincoln memorial and the capitol, is a wonderful place. It showcases our form of government (as our legislators work in the capitol), our interest in the arts (national gallery, Hirshhorn, Freer, Sackler), in science of all kinds (natural history, air and space), in history (American history, memorials to leaders and our fallen-in-war). Some museums showcase history, art, culture, and science, as do the African Art Museum and the Museum of the American Indian.
Our mall is large, like our country, and open, and all the treasures displayed here are available for everyone to see.
Last Thursday the grassy areas at the east end of the mall were all surrounded by snow fence. I'm sure that is necessary to give the grass a chance to recover from the insults of the summer, but it sure detracts from my pictures!

This post brought back some nice memories, I visited Washington DC for a day on the way down to Virginia on one of my visits to the US. I wasn't very bothered about seeing it but my friend wanted to visit the Vietnam Memorial and museums so I just went along. It turned out to be the most interesting and enjoyable day of the whole holiday. Now I'd like to go back some day and see all the places I didn't have time for especially the Museum about Native Americans, that would have been top of my list but I seem to remember that it wasn't finished when I was there. As` it was the Air and Space Museum (Harry's choice, me on entry - oh,boring, boring. On exit - what a fantastic place! Lesson, never pass up on any opportunity, you could miss an awful lot.
You are correct, the Museum of the American Indian (name chosen by our first nations people) is very new. There are lots of amazingly wonderful artifacts there, and the most interesting food! The food is based on ingredients used by people here before Europeans. You can get quinoa soup, buffalo tacos, etc. Choosing is very hard -- you can get tastes!
I agree with you, entirely, on being open to new experiences. Something that doesn't seem that interesting can turn out to be the best. My favorite thing at Air&Space is the piece of moonrock you can touch. A piece of another world..... Gives me chills.
