February 24

.

On the 24th I went to yoga in the morning, because we wouldn't be in Ann Arbor in the evening.

There was about half an inch of snow on the ground when I walked to yoga, and two hours later, when I walked home, the snow was 2-3" deep.......

Walking home.  This is the pond in West Park.  I think the holes in the ice on the pond looked like neurons.

Here's a wider view, with a couple of neurons visible in the lower right quadrant.

It kept on snowing.

We decided to pack up and stay overnight near the funeral home (visitation Wednesday evening 24th) and the church (funeral Thursday morning 25th), rather than driving back and forth in the middle of a winter storm.

You can't tell, but on the 24th I saw the biggest snowflakes (snowglobs?) I'd ever seen.  Usually I think they are big if they are an inch in any dimension.  These were two inches by one inch, I bet (and I don't know how thick).  They were incredibly big.

Luckily the plows were doing a good job of keeping the roads passable, and the traffic wasn't too bad.

Another attempt to show how big those "flakes" were.

It took us about an hour and forty minutes to make a trip that usually takes an hour.

The weather meant a smaller crowd at the funeral home than there might have been.  But some intrepid family and friends came, anyway.

It was nice to have a chance to catch up with people we don't see all that often, and with some that we see more often.

The flowers were beautiful, and the food (provided by our daughter's very nice boss) was delicious.

The more I hear and learn about Zingerman's, the more I like them.

I believe they really intend to be (and work toward being) a force for good, and they have that intent for everyone. Producers, suppliers, employees, bosses, customers...........

I remember that day well. I think we got a foot or more. Smart of you to stay overnight. Very smart. I wonder if I would have thought of that...

I don't know how much Ann Arbor got, but it was a lot, and all of it wet and heavy, when we had to shovel it on the 24th............

I seriously hate any trip that requires 275 and 696, so any time I can avoid one (or two!) trips on those roads I'm going to jump on that possibility.

None of us slept very well, on strange and less-than-optimal beds, but at least we weren't risking our lives on roads that are a nasty drive even when dry and in daylight!
